What is work-based learning?

A: It brings together classroom education and real-world workplace experience, giving students the chance to apply academic and technical skills, explore career possibilities and build professional habits. Through structured opportunities such as internships, job shadows, apprenticeships and workplace tours, students gain hands-on exposure while employers shape the next generation of the workforce aligned with their needs.

How does an apprenticeship work?

A: By providing on-the-job training through high school apprenticeships, businesses can develop and retain a skilled workforce while helping students earn college credits and national industry credentials.

How an Apprenticeship Works

1. Students typically begin during the summer between 11th and 12th grade, working full-time at your site.
2. During their senior year, they split their time between school and work (four hours daily on-site).
3. After graduation, apprentices continue working until they meet all required training hours and competencies.
4. 91% of apprentices remain employed nine months after completing their program, making apprenticeships a smart investment for business longevity.

Is there a cost?

A: It’s free for both the employer and candidate. You just need to be a company located in Illinois or Iowa in the Quad Cities. As a candidate, you just need to be a U.S.resident.
