Frequently Asked Questions

What is work-based learning?

A: It brings together classroom education and real-world workplace experience, giving students the chance to apply academic and technical skills, explore career possibilities and build professional habits. Through structured opportunities such as internships, job shadows, apprenticeships and workplace tours, students gain hands-on exposure while employers shape the next generation of the workforce aligned with their needs.

How does an apprenticeship work?

A: By providing on-the-job training through high school apprenticeships, businesses can develop and retain a skilled workforce while helping students earn college credits and national industry credentials.

How an Apprenticeship Works

  1. Students typically begin during the summer between 11th and 12th grade, working full-time at your site.
  2. During their senior year, they split their time between school and work (four hours daily on-site).
  3. After graduation, apprentices continue working until they meet all required training hours and competencies.
  4. 91% of apprentices remain employed nine months after completing their program, making apprenticeships a smart investment for business longevity.

Business Requirements

Businesses partnering in high school apprenticeship programs provide:

  1. On-the-job training, starting the summer after junior year.
  2. Paid work opportunities throughout the program.
  3. Mentorship and technical/behavioral training.
  4. Ongoing feedback to the student and school.

How does an internship work?

A: Internships provide students hands-on work experiences that connect classroom learning to real-world career skills under the guidance of a professional mentor.

How Internships Work

  1. Internships can be part-time or full-time and usually last a few weeks to several months.
  2. They can be paid or unpaid., short-term or long-term.
  3. Each intern is paired with a mentor or supervisor who provides guidance and feedback.
  4. The experience helps students build skills, explore career options, and prepare for the workforce.

Business Requirements

  1. Provide a safe, supportive environment and meaningful work experiences.
  2. Designate a staff member to supervise and mentor the intern.
  3. Outline clear goals, tasks and timelines for the internship.
  4. Offer feedback and complete a brief evaluation at the end of the program.
